Anyone know what species this is?
I was recently out with friends who live FAR far away (as in 15 hour flight to get there) and introduced their kids to the joys of rolling that bark off the branches. As a kid I used to sit and roll roll roll that bark off forever. Very zen and relaxing. =)

P.S. Answer to last week's quiz is mountain goats! So (I believe it was) skepticalmoth who was right again! (ding ding ding ding!) One person I was hiking with used that photograph to make a wildlife observation report for Mount Rainier NP.
Madrone (Arbutus menziesii)? Once wrote a poem about a lovely madrone encountered during a murrelet survey. Gentle curves, soft, tanned bark like skin. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteOhhh Madrone! Arbutus menziesii. That red peeling bark is pretty distinctive.

Two most EXCELLENT guesses, but believe it or not, it's NOT madrone. It's another species, less glamorous, perhaps, but similar re: gorgeous smooth-to-peeling reddish bark....
ReplyDeleteVery cool photo. But no guess. I'm not feeling so S.M.R.T, I mean S.M.A.R.T. tonight :)
ReplyDelete@ Kyna: =) I have a friend who has an SMRT ballcap. And to top it off, this is the SECOND time I've commented 'cause the 1st time I forgot to click on Post Comment because I am SO SMRT! =)
ReplyDeleteManzanita?
ReplyDeleteYes! We have a winner, be they ever-so-anonymous. =) Yes, manzanita, a very common shrub on our property and in the region (this was from the hike to Sentinel Dome).
ReplyDeleteGreat work and thanks EVERYONE for your guesses and comments. =)
