Oh, nice, Dave. I looked it up (in my beloved field guide to galls, yum!), and sawfly IS what looks most like it. And this plant probably was a willow--it was RIGHT on the edge of the Yosemite Creek. I believe you are correct, sir!
wow. so clear. i would love to wander there...peaceful...so many rocks, stones...that poor tree...caught between a rock and a hard place...oh yeah, caught between 2 rocks...uh, boulders!(damn! i entered the character wrong...this is frustrating...i try again...)
