poppies & popcorn flowers: 1 shot post

California poppies, popcorn flower, South Fork of the Merced River

This shot makes me dizzy, in a good kind of way.
From March, 2012, Hite's Cove Trail.

Will be working lots the next month or two,
so may be posting photos from the past,
just to keep the colors changing here.

And precious few words.

Which, personally, I like as a blog-browser. =)

If you want to launch your guess re: vocab quiz (last post),
please comment on that post ASAP.
I'll post the answer soon...

xoxoxo!

Peeping at posies w/CNPS Power Plant People

Fiddleneck flower faces. Genus = Amsinckia.

Per Jepson, Amsinckia "Seeds and herbage TOXIC to livestock (especially cattle)
from alkaloids and high nitrate concentrations. Sharp plant hairs irritate human skin."
Translation: Look, but don't touch. Or eat. Pretty please.

CAVEAT: these few shots are from yesterday's lovely hike with
California Native Plant Society and their noble members,
and all plant names are approximate:
I have stuff to do today, didn't take notes yesterday,
and am not a botanical wizard so would have to key stuff out.
No time, but, much love. =)

It was a lovely day for hiking west along the Merced River
to its confluence with the North Fork of the Merced.

Frequently I'd ask some CNPS smarty what something was,
and the person reply by naming the species-end of the latin binomial.

As in look at my face and say "elegans."
And I'd look at their face and say nothing.

Then I'd swallow my pride, and ask "So, uh... what's the genus?"
The first step in learning is declaring ignorance. =)

Caterpillar phacelia (Phacelia cicutaria) mit bee (dig that fancy wing cut!)

Redbud, Cercis occidentalis. That flower looks like a pair of shoes, to me.

And last, but not least, lichen posing as California poppy:

Yosemite in fall? Meh...

There's no blazing fall colors.
It's really dry.
Honestly, I'd skip it.

P.S. This is another thinly disguised wallpaper post, celebrating autumn & the forecast high temps (80s & 70s) w/ rain possible. Hooray!!
P.P.S. I hope it is understood that my goal is to encourage everyone to visit (wherever), not to actually be obnoxious. =)

Mumday from best poppy bloom EVER: 2009

The craziest poppy year EVER, according to numerous local people, including a smarty pants Fire Ecologist who's lived in El Portal for 30 years. This was all along the Merced River canyon, just west of Yosemite NP, and one year after a huge fire in the area. My favorite theory was that allll the ash that showered the hillsides for days and days was a natural fertilizer and the poppies went NUTS.

And this isn't my favorite shot from that day.

The cones and rods in my eyes were pretty much burned out after 2 hours.

An incredible experience.

=)

And taken March 20th, so spring is on its way!

wandering Yosemite valley

My reward for going to the dentist (aside from dental health, which I dearly value): kicking around the valley for a few minutes.

Trail behind Yosemite lodge, that goes to the Merced River.

Cold, quiet river hit.

Spring is coming (and in this case looks like a dog's paw)...

View through my sunroof. El Capitan, for those who don't know.

View from my favorite parking lot on the planet. Merced at feet, Bridal Veil fall in view.

Yeah, it's okay. If you like that sort of thing....

Parking lot attendants, showing one of the benefits of being paired up--mutual grooming. Feels good and good for you. Gives your mate a cute hairdo.

And then you have someone to enjoy the view with.
