bb dragged away in handcuffs?

Ah, apparently not.

This feather, that I collected (from the ground by my gym)
for the amusement of my (indoor) kitties, is not, I repeat,

Phew!

A kind facebook reader of my babblings had gently pointed out that
by collecting said feather I was breaking the law which,
oh-so-conveniently, I'd COMPLETELY forgotten about.

Despite being a biologist. Yeah. A professional. Paid to know these things. Oops.

See, we're not allowed to have parts of any birds or their nests, etc.,
if they're protected by the MBTA. You, me, et al.
And most birds you'll see are on that list.

However, just figured out that this feather (and the others like it)
comes from a TURKEY!

You can see those feathers when the males drag their wings
in full display-to-the-ladies mode.

And turkeys are a) not native to this part of the U.S. and b) not migratory.

Though heaven knows I'd love to see them try.

So I did not break the law.
By total chance.

Which is fortunate, 'cause since then I forgot again,
and collected another big fatty from my neighborhood for the kitties.

So, I solemnly swear I'll be more aware of environmental laws in future,
and not allow my love for amused kitties to blind me.

=)

possibly premature re: Joshua Tree NP annoucement...

Well, now not so sure it's over.

Heard rumors that it may not be.

To quote myself upon learning this:

"Aw, crap."

Pretty much says it all.

Joshua Tree NP - NOT going to get dumped! YAY!

As far as I can tell, this is REALLY good news.

I learned about the proposed project many years ago when I was at an NPS training and a guy from that park talked about it. WOAH. It was HUGE.

According to the NPCA it was going to be the largest dump in the U.S.,
right next to the park.

Wow. Scary stuff, ecologically speaking.

From the NPCA announcement:

"...the Supreme Court has announced that it will not hear an appeal from Kaiser Ventures, LLC, the corporation seeking to build the dump. This decision confirms a 2009 U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision, overturning the land exchange necessary for the development of the dump."

This is really good news.

Joshua Tree National Park
is one of the most enchanting places I've ever been.

And I don't talk like that a lot: I'm a science dork.

But, this place is amazing.

If you've never been there, for heaven's sake GET THERE
and bring ANYONE who will come along.
Of course, I recommend spring and fall. =)

Something about this place makes me want to walk. For DAYS.
It's a walkabout siren, for sure.

So, I'd like to say,

PHEW!

And HOORAY to everyone who helped make this ending
an ecologically happy one.

They helped assure that this hawk has clean digs.

=)

So if, by any chance, YOU helped,

THANK YOU!

Nice work.
