too hot to blog, and not in a fun way

Hosting an ice cream social tonight. It may be 105 by then.

Been working tons, and playing little,
plus if it's not 7 am or 7 pm,
it's too hot to be out,
so not a lot of photography is going down.

Kinda like so many other species in summer,
slowing down, laying low, standing in cool water,
waiting for it to pass.
Me and the hens.

Here's a TINY, tiny creature that is way tougher than I.
A caterpillar on an indigo plant in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

Hope y'all are staying cool (or at least comfy)
wherever you are. =)

Ch-ch-ch-changes: If you've not noticed...

I've added pages to this blog, wherein I will house the species I have identified (frequently with your help), so I can work on cumulative learning vs.
"ooh, cool!"
(one one-thousand, two one-thousand)
... annnd delete-from-brain.

mantid on our house 2 days ago; it's amazing how they can defy gravity so well.

Also, then I'm not embarrassed by asking, say, skepticalmoth
to identify a moth species he's already kindly identified for me. =)

Different day = different moth, right?

Uh, no.

(this fairy moth isn't the one, tho' he did identify this one for me, too)

Check out upper right hand corner of the white space under "Pages" (such a clever name!): home, plants, hymenoptera, and "what's what" which explains them.

Hope your weekend is moving along nicely. I am finding that I cannot stop picking beans.

It's VERY relaxing.

Very zen.

*sigh*

Much like doing owl limpet plots, believe it or not.

=)

how to bake a blog: blog-nerd questions

If you have any opinion about the stuff on the right side of this blog (keep, nuke, move), feel free to share. I am tinkering.

  • I deleted "recent comments" 'cause it's embarrassing how many times it's me (still babbling),
  • will probably delete the new "popular posts" 'cause it's a bit too "it's all about ME!!!!"
  • added a search function (totally for me),
  • deleted the sharing thing 'cause I don't think it gets used.

Trying to get the blend right

Anything there you like and want me to keep/undelete? Do you like seeing your comments on that side thingy? Please lemmeno and/or share your experience with your blog. =)

Thanks!

oops, 1 year bloggiversary was ...

well, see, this morning I was reading about Kyna's 1 year bloggiversary, then thought, hmm, I know I started in January last year, so looked it up, and lo and behold, my first post was January 6th of last year.

Yup, yesterday.

Classic.

=)

Hee. Never been super into birthdays, anniversaries, etc., but at least now I know that my inattention is global--I apparently ignore myself as well as everyone else.

You might guess I have exceedingly forgiving friends, si?

Anyhow, I SHOULD thank you all for stopping by, taking a peek, and commenting whenever inspired. So,

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

A photographic thank you: (DO click on these, SO much better big...)

There are SO many interesting, smart, observant, insightful, talented folks out there (uh, that'd be YOU), it's been a total pleasure learning about YOU guys. Deelightful. That's been just about the best part of this blog, and it was totally unanticipated. So, thanks! =)

And of course, this blog has been very fun to create, I'm lovin' sharing photos, learning stuff as I babble about it, and the fact that when I'm deciding whether or not to get out side and check things out, I think about the blog, grab my camera, and GO.

Awesome.

Alrighty. I'm out.

NaNoWriMo... invitation and heads up

1. National Novel Writing Month is next month (November). See this post for details.. Right when I signed up I was nervous. Then it abated. Now, it's back.

If you write 50,000 words in 30 days, you win. What you win is a draft novel. =)

And bragging rights ("Well, dahling, before I wrote my novel, I'd never even been to Africa, if you can believe it...").

2. Geek's approach to huge writing task

Quantify, quantify, and cite references:

# wds needed: 50,000
ave # wds/day: 1666.7
ave # wds/page (published novel): 250.0
ave pages/day: 6.7

And research: I'm headed to novel's main location this month, and asked friend who lives there for books I should read. You're allowed to do research, character sketches, etc. before November, but not write the actual text.

3. So, anyone interested in joining me?

This took is appropriate for SO many reasons: title, frightened person looking at giant ogre of a task, etc. =)

I've got one sister-in-law and one niece (my niece successfully completed this LAST year--woah!) who are signed up, and one cousin who isn't, but is already into her novel. Guess we're wordy people.

NaNoWriMo realize people have lives and jobs, so they anticipate a peak in coffee sales that month. Any interest? None? Been there, done that? DO tell.

4. The heads up: I am anticipating a blogging stoppage.

[the masses clasp their heads in their hands and shriek, "Noooooooooooo!"]

Don't know if it will be full stop, but it's possible this blog may have to take a vaca [vay'-kay] all of November.

I'm tempted to chronicle the process if I have any typing ability left during that month. We'll see. I really have NO idea what it'll be like. Never tried anything like this. I have NO feel for the workload.

ANYhow, lemmeno if you are interested, if you've ever thought about writing a novel/book, if you've heard of this, etc., or if you've ALREADY published a novel/book, and what it was like. =)
